Exclusively for 48 Passionate Artists
Early-Bird pricing ends midnight May 15th
Step away from noisy tourist areas into a world of untouched beauty. PleinAir visionary Eric Rhoads has designed an extraordinary and exclusive 11-day luxury painting trip through Switzerland’s secluded Alpine valleys and charming villages to create the ultimate body of work and a lifetime of memories. We’ll paint the same scenery which inspired Sargent, Monet, Renoir, Sorolla, Courbet, Cassatt, Pissaro, Bierstadt, Levitan and others.
Tailored for 48 dedicated artists of all levels, this is your chance to capture the fleeting interplay of light across the Swiss Alps—far from crowded lookouts. Expect unparalleled indulgence: premium hotels, gourmet meals, and private access to painting spots unreachable by ordinary tours. With only the murmur of cowbells and the soft sweep of a golden eagle overhead, this is more than a trip—it’s a rare communion of art and nature. Spaces are strictly limited and fill quickly.
Eric Rhoads’ Paint Switzerland™ 2025
Join us for an unforgettable 11-day plein air painting journey through Switzerland's most enchanting alpine villages and hidden corners. Our carefully curated itinerary takes you beyond the tourist crowds to discover the authentic heart of the Swiss Alps, where time seems to stand still and every vista tells a story.
We'll tour and paint must see cities like Lucerne, but then venture into the countryside to quaint villages like Grinderwald, Lauderbrunen, Engleberg, Lungren and Brienze to create stunning paintings and lifetime memories.

A highlight of our artistic journey in the charming villages of Zermatt and Mt Blanc, where traditional wooden chalets dot the landscape beneath the iconic Matterhorn.
We'll set up our easels in carefully selected locations that offer inspiration, capturing the mountain's dramatic presence as pink morning light plays across its distinctive pyramid shape. The car-free village streets provide endless compositional possibilities, from flowering window boxes to ancient timber barns. There are a hundred paintings in this village alone, and you’ll stand where great artists of the past painted.
Journey to the lesser-known (and very paintable) villages of Wengen and Mürren, where the massive Jungfrau will be visible in every painting.
These traffic-free hamlets, accessible only by cable car, offer unparalleled views of the mountain trilogy: Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Paint from flower-filled alpine meadows as cowbells chime in the distance and golden afternoon light bathes the snow-capped peaks. And for those who wish, a one day excursion to the top of the Jungfrau is optional.
Lake Como', Clarkson Frederick Stanfield, 1825 (Tate Museum)
Cross into Italy's Lake District, where the commanding Alps meet Mediterranean warmth. From our base in a centuries-old villa, we'll capture the interplay of light on water, historic villages reflecting in the crystal-clear lake, and gardens bursting with color and we'll miss the high tourist season.
The lake's unique microclimate creates atmospheric effects that have captivated artists for generations and inspired paintings for hundreds of years, including Sargent, Klimpt, Churchill, J.M.W. Turner and countless others.
Conclude your journey at the magnificent Neuschwanstein Castle, where fantasy meets reality.
We'll cross the border into Germany to Paint this nineteenth-century masterpiece from lesser-known vantage points that showcase both its architectural grandeur and its stunning natural setting in the Bavarian Alps. You'll visit three countries: Switzerland, Germany and Italy.

Yes, Not only is Eric Rhoads (publisher of PleinAir magazine) hosting the trip, he will be painting with you every day. With such a small group everyone will become close friends.
Fly into Zurich Airport on October 10, 2025.
Fly out of Malpensa International Airport (Milan) on October 20, 2025.
Because many people are coming from different areas, airfare could not be included.
Yes, bring a non painting friend along. However they need to know we'll be stopping and painting at some locations for up to 2-3 hours in some cases and possibly painting multiple times daily. They will need a good book or a camera.
Yes, family members are welcome as long as they understand that we’ll be touring and stopping to paint most days.
Absolutely.
Yes. No children under 16 please.
Many people like to sketch or just enjoy nature. Many will use the opportunity to create reference photos for future paintings. There is no requirement to paint.
We try to paint most days, however, there may be an occasional day without painting due to our schedule. Typically our painting window is between 90 and 120 minutes, which includes finding your inspiration, setting up your gear, doing your painting, and packing up in time. This is why we recommend painting small, depending on your speed.
This is a painting trip, it does not include instruction of any kind, though others are often willing to help out or answer questions.
Your airline will influence what weight you can pack. We like to recommend that everything be placed in a small backpack, which might mean a travel easel is best. Eric uses a small rolling backpack with big wheels. Eric says, "If it does not fit into a backpack, you don't need it."
We recommend you consider painting in acrylic, water-based oil, gouache or watercolor because you cannot travel with solvents and may not be able to find them. Plus non oil mediums dry fast, therefore you don't need panel carriers.
We recommend you consider painting small due to the limit on painting time unless you can complete your size in 90 minutes to an hour (so we also have time for meals and touring).
You will want to bring enough panels to do a couple paintings each day, though not every day will have two locations.
Painters packing list:
- Easel/Tripod
- Panels or paper
- Sketch pad
- Paint (print out our label to stick on your paint box here)
- Cloth or towel
- Bag for used rags
- Brushes
- Easel Brush Clip and Value Specs
- Wet Panel carrier (Panel Pak, Raymar, or Judsons Plein Air)
- Painting Gloves if its cold
- Hat for the sun
- Palette Knife
Note: Most oil kits (and brush cleaners) need to be checked baggage. Typically paints are not allowed in the cockpit. Palette knives and razor scrapers are not allowed. Solvents are flammable and are not allowed on flights.
We recommend you consider painting in acrylic, water-based oil, gouache or watercolor because you cannot travel with solvents and may not be able to find them. Plus non oil mediums dry fast, therefore you don't need panel carriers.
Sorry, we do not. However if you wish to find someone to come on the trip to carry for you, we’re ok with that.
Unfortunately, once we have passed our deadlines, we cannot refund your money for any reason, because we have already encountered the expenses with advance booking, holding up rooms, etc. We strongly recommend travel insurance. We will also allow for a last minute substitution (sorry we cannot support substitutions without ten days notice), however, if one is not provided, there will be no refund. Please read our refund policy carefully.
WiFi should be available in all hotels; most are luxury hotels. Each handles WiFi differently.
We are sensitive to all diet needs and are able to make arrangements if we have advance notice. We will be in multiple restaurants and hotels, therefore, like all restaurants, each may handle these needs differently?
Most day trips may require a lot of walking. Oftentimes buses cannot come close to the painting locations or even the city centers, therefore you may have to walk with your painting gear. Depending on the day, we often walk to locations, walk to meals or walk through towns. A fair amount of walking is necessary. There is also the possibility of steps. However, if you know you have issues with walking or keeping up with the group, or climbing steps, you might find it frustrating trying to keep up and we need you to be on time. If you have special needs, you can arrange for private transportation (at your expense) where needed, we cannot guarantee each location for painting or touring will be completely accessible, though we'll work hard to accommodate you.
Fall in the Alps is usually cool but pleasant. But in October, the weather in the Swiss Alps can be quite variable, as it transitions from autumn to the early stages of winter. Lower Altitudes (around 1,000–2,000 meters): Daytime temperatures can range from 8°C to 15°C (46°F to 59°F), while nighttime temperatures might drop to 2°C to 5°C (36°F to 41°F). Higher Altitudes (above 2,500 meters): Daytime highs will be cooler, ranging between 2°C and 6°C (36°F to 43°F), and nighttime temperatures can plummet to below freezing.
Rain is common in lower regions, particularly in the first half of the month, but as the month progresses, there's an increased chance of snowfall at higher elevations. Some mountain passes may even experience early snow. Snow is more likely on higher peaks above 2,500 meters, and by late October, ski resorts may start preparing for the season. October generally sees a good number of sunny days, especially earlier in the month, but the weather can change rapidly, so it's best to be prepared for sudden cloud cover or rain.
We will be painting and touring during the same day, therefore wear something that you’re comfortable wearing in both scenarios (you may want an apron or paint shirt). We recommend a hat for sun shade (and sun screen) because you can burn fast at high altitudes. You may want to bring an outfit for nice dinners out, however we do not require anything dressy. Bring comfortable shoes.
Layers are essential, including a warm jacket, waterproof gear, and sturdy hiking boots. Consider packing gloves, a hat, and thermal clothing.
We're targeting fifty people including tour guides and hosts, however if there is strong interest, we may consider increasing the size of the group, however this is unlikely.
Not from the US, however, we often have guests from other countries. Our travel partners can help with individual needs and travel arrangements. You do need a valid U.S. Passport. It must be valid for at least 90 days after your planned departure.
The official currency is the Swiss franc (CHF). Switzerland does not officially use the euro as its currency. However, euros are accepted in some places, particularly in tourist areas, but they are usually given at an unfavorable exchange rate. It's always a good idea to pay in Swiss francs to avoid extra charges or a poor exchange rate. Many places, like shops, restaurants, and hotels, will accept euros, but it's not guaranteed everywhere.
If by some chance the trip is cancelled by us or reasons beyond our control, you will receive a full refund (minus a credit card processing fee). We cannot refund airfare, which is why we strongly recommend travel insurance for the entire trip. You should study our refund policy posted here.
Yes, in fact we encourage it. To do so you need to call our office at (561) 655-8778 and make arrangements.
